The city began purchasing property for the complex in 2007, eventually acquiring more than 80 acres of land. The facility took several years to design, and construction began in 2018. The Sportsplex welcomed its first competitors in 2023 as construction activities were wrapping up. With only the dog park and short segments of trail to complete, officials are ready to open the facility to public use. “People have been so excited to see and use the Sportsplex and they’ve waited patiently. It’s time to let everyone enjoy it,” remarked Mayor Smith.
Boasting 8 multi-purpose synthetic turf fields, six beach volleyball courts, a fitness court, four pickleball courts, an inclusive accessible playground, several pavilions, more than 1.5 miles of paved walking paths and nature trails, and soon, a dog park for small and large breeds, the Cone Health ZooCity Sportsplex offers both serious athletes and casual exercisers a unique experience.
